Are you struggling to get results? Is closing the clients a rare event for you? Do you think building trust requires any exceptional talents or magic? Then you must be missing out on positioning.
Recently I encountered a setback at the beginning of the conversation with a potential prospect. Also, the concern of one more friend is related to the same. So I decided to dedicate today to how you can control the outcome by just making small changes.
What is Positioning and Why It is Important?
In simple words, positioning is nothing but setting an impression about yourself or how others should perceive your message.
Most of the time, people fail to achieve their results because they fail to communicate where they stand.
Only when the target audience understand who you are, then they will see as they should be.
You must be thinking, why does it even matter? What matters is the information and how you communicate it. If you are thinking this way, you should change your perspective ASAP. I, too, committed the same mistake in my initial days and learnt the hard way.
Let me tell you one thing. Information is everywhere. However, the perceived value of it depends on the person who communicates it.
If others see you as an authority, then only they pay complete attention to your message. Only when they pay absolute attention to your message, then only the conversions will be as you expect.
That is why you should focus more on the way you are positioning yourself when you are not getting results.
Steps to Position Yourself the Right Way
From my experience, I understood that people struggle only in the initial stages of their careers. Some learn it over time and achieve success. Whereas others struggle and might give up if they don’t.
Everywhere, be it online or offline, an individual or a company, positioning is crucial. Psychologically every outcome is related to how the target audience perceives it.
We, generally, have two scenarios.
- You, working as an individual. (Yes, I am a solopreneur, and I love to work individually)
- You, working with a team. (Yes, I love to be a team player and believe in growing together with everyone)
Work with the words!
Put more emphasis on what you have achieved so far and what you do instead of on the job title.
For example, let’s say you are an SEO expert serving dentists to get more organic leads. You have two ways to describe what you do.
1. You can say I am an SEO expert, and I serve dentists. (or)
2. You can say I help dentists get more organic leads without spending on ads.
Which one is more appealing? The second one, right?
Even if you are a beginner, you can phrase it this way.
If you are working as a team where others handle the communication, you can focus on edification when you introduce your teammates.
Crux
I want to give an example of an agency where everyone focuses on their strengths. One person handles client communications as it is his core strength.
The main person diverted the client to the BDA. The client’s response is this, “I want to speak with the main person who handles the job, not others.”
Only if proper edification was done, the clients’ response wouldn’t be that way.
It is nothing but positioning others in your team before communication. It is nothing but preparing others for the first communication.
