“Fake it until you make it” or “Fake it until you get it”.
Irrespective of the term we use, do you know people understood it selectively?
Have you ever faked your skillset in front of an employer or a client?
Have you ever faked your experience?
Situations would make a never-ending list.
You know what?
Selective listeners are many because we see things with our lenses instead of seeing the truth.
So, we interpret everything we see or hear in our way and form our theories around it.
Even I committed that mistake and learnt things the hard way.
Are you wondering how? — Because everything has a price.
I am sure you didn’t understand the relevance of my words.
I will give you an example. Before we step into it, I want to clear one thing. If you stay till the end, you will be able to see the truth behind “fake it until you make it”. Let’s get into the story now.
iPhone Story
Let’s say someone sold you a duplicate iPhone. And you are so excited and happy to use it. But one of your friends is using the real iPhone of the same model as yours. What happens when you get your hands on your friend’s mobile? Yes, you understand that something is fishy with your mobile.
And what happens to the guy who handed you the duplicate one to replace it with the real one once he gets the original piece?
I am sorry, but I can’t help with the complicated analogy.
Now, let’s put in the shoes of the seller.
Why do you think he did that way?
Yes, he doesn’t want to lose the customer. (reasons may be many, but he faked)
He might have done it out of desperation to get the deal.
Yes, people tend to fake only when they want to make things happen. And they will be impossible with the current reality.
Yes, they want to turn their aspirations into reality.
But what if the other party notices that?
Trust issues start from there.
We all know it takes years to build trust, seconds to break and forever to repair.
It will indirectly affect our reputation.
It has many adverse effects on us if we project a false image of ours in front of people.
I will tell you some:
If you fake it to get a job, even if you get the job, you can’t accept it with the fear of getting found.
If you fake it in front of a client, his/her expectations will be high, which is not healthy for both parties. You may lose the deal if you don’t meet the expectations though you go all out to make things happen.
You’ll always need to protect a false image till it becomes a reality.
After knowing all of this information, you must have got one thought.
The phrase “fake it until you make it” wouldn’t have become so famous if it brings such consequences.
Yes, I want to convey the same thought.
The Message Behind Fake it Until You Make it!
Faking before we make something happen is actually to put your subconscious mind to believe that you already attained your goals.
And here faking, means showing confidence and behaving as if we already achieved our goals. It will help us to have that positive mindset that will turn our perceived image into reality.
It doesn’t have anything to do with others as we have to work only on ourselves in this exercise.
One more analogy is “the Law of Attraction”. When you act and behave as you already have it, you’ll attract the patterns to turn them into a reality.
The article won’t be complete if I don’t give you examples of the use cases when we fake it until you make it the right way.
- The interviewer will see your confidence that will help you in getting that job.
- The client will have realistic expectations, and he will appreciate your honesty which will build a strong connection and lifetime association.
Because, in both cases, your confidence levels will be high, which the other party can notice. That will help you turn your perceived image into reality.
In simple words, you need to work inside out to make things happen.
If you pay close attention, any creation happens only from the inside out.
Without realising this, we always start our work from outside, even the faking.
If you stay till the end, I am happy that you found value in my article.
