Are you a struggling freelancer? Is getting clients a nightmare for you? Then you are at the right place. Some of my friends asked me how to get clients for their freelance services. So, I decided to write this post so that it will be helpful for everyone.

Recently, even one person texted me to guide him in his freelancing journey.

What I am sharing:

  1. Common mistakes people commit at the beginning of their freelancing journey.
  2. Strategies I followed to get clients.
  3. Framework to get clients on autopilot mode.

Common Mistakes People Commit at the Beginning of their Freelancing Journey

I am sharing the mistakes some of my friends as well as I committed in the initial days.

One is not fixing the services you want to provide.

  • Choosing a service to offer to the clients, then trying to reach some.
  • Not everyone converts for the service as you are an absolute beginner.
  • Then you think, maybe getting gigs for this service is tricky and decide to offer other services.

As people face this problem, we commit one more mistake of offering every service in their field.

After some time, people try to look for other ways thinking that freelancing is not their cup of tea.

Strategies I Followed to Get Clients for my Freelance Services

One of the best ways to get clients at the beginning of your freelance journey is to find them in/through your contacts. You can also actively network with people and let them know that you offer freelance services.

Steps to follow:

  1. Create a mechanism to get known that you offer freelance services.
  2. Reach out to your friends and update them that you are offering these services and ask for referrals.
  3. Actively network with people and build strong connections. Also, let them know what you are doing. Let them know that you can get the things done, and they will reach you when they need anything regarding their business.

If I meet a person and our thoughts are inclined, I build a strong connection with them. And in the last month, one of my friends invited me to his restaurant.

After I visited, he asked me if I could spread the word in my contacts about his business. And it turned out to be a gig for me, and he agreed to our collaboration, and we are about to get started.

Through this cycle and my mentors, I understood a framework to get clients on an autopilot mode. Let’s throw light on that in the next section.

Framework to get Clients on Autopilot Mode

  1. Take SWOT analysis to find where you are feeling more confident in your field.
  2. Choose a niche where you have an idea of how things work. Example: The fitness industry
  3. Narrow it down to select a micro-niche. — It will become easy to target people. Example: Gyms for weight loss.
  4. Prepare a strategy on how they can generate more business. Share it on your social media handle or website. Break it down into three offers:
    1. Do it yourself — You give strategy to clients, and they will do everything on their own.
    2. Do it with you — You give them a strategy and help them implement it.
    3. Do it for you — If the other person is busy, you can do everything for them.
  5. Hang out in the places where your target customers hang out and add value to their concerns.
  6. Then people will come to you if they are stuck in their business.
  7. You can offer a free consultation to them. Add more value even in the free consultation.
  8. It helps you build credibility, and you start getting gigs from them if they are busy and can’t implement everything by themselves.
  9. Take reviews and from the people who take the consultation and services, fine-tune your offering. It helps in adding more value as you go and also makes you an authority in that area.
  10. Then you can expand your services to other niches as anyways you will be having a portfolio and branding.

I hope this helps you in your freelance journey. Did I miss anything? Do let me know by commenting below.
