Ayurveda — Is everything related to it, a medicine?

I am a part of Advanced Ayurveda. I actively participate in different programs to enlighten myself. During one such e-meet, one person asked me if there is any ayurvedic medicine to get rid of covid. Then I realized that most of us have thought that Ayurveda is a medicine. It is the seed for this blog post.

First of all, I have a question for you. What do our grandparents used to do when they get a cough or a fever? They drink kashaya. If you are not sure about it you can ask your parents😅.

Here is my question, is it medicine?

You will understand it by the end of this article.

The term Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words Ayur means life, and Veda means science or knowledge. It means Ayurveda is the science of life.

Let’s get into the subject without technical stuff like Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. So let’s understand and our body first.

What plays a very key role in our body?

Yes, it is the brain and the reason is obvious as everyone knows it.

What if I tell you there is a second brain in our body which works all the time for our proper functioning?

Yes, you heard me right. It is gut. And if you want to lead a healthy life you need to keep your gut healthy.

The reason is, it takes care of the below tasks.

  1. Digestion
  2. Absorption
  3. Healing
  4. Excretion

Let’s talk about what happens when we eat food. You know it gets digested in the stomach after which the walls of the intestine absorb the nutrients and send them to all parts of the body.

We all know about this stuff. But there is something that happens beyond this which is in control of the gut. That is healing. Yes, healing is also the job of the gut.

And the body excretes the waste through different channels. Let’s get more into this part.

Irrespective of the kind of industry, waste is inevitable at the end of any process. And that needs to be disposed of.

In the same way, different organs form waste and the body excretes it through 4 detox channels.

  1. Stool — Intestine’s waste
  2. Urine — Kidney’s waste
  3. Sweat — Skin’s waste
  4. Breath — Lung’s waste

This is how the body keeps optimum functioning.

We get health issues when there is a disruption in any of these processes.

For example, what happens when we don’t remove the waste from our house?

Yes, it will be rotten and we get the smell and discomfort.

The same thing happens in our body too. And there is the best doctor in our body to set things alright. That doctor is the immune system.

As the reason for health challenges is the blockage of the waste in the body, our immune system improves the efficiency of the detox channels to eliminate the waste.

  1. Diarrhoea — Stool
  2. Fever — Sweat
  3. Cold — Breath
  4. Vomiting — Mouth

When our body has excess waste/toxins, immunity uses the 5th channel to flush it out and it is the mouth.

Whenever we fall ill, we simply take a pill.

Do you think they work on the root cause?

Exactly, they work only on the symptoms. Now, let’s go to Ayurveda, to know if it is a medicine.

You are getting me right, yes, Ayurveda works on the root cause.

If you remember the case I used with cough or fever in the beginning?

What is kashaya doing in that case?

Just like even a great warrior needs a tool to conquer the world, our immunity also needs a tool to keep everything in optimum condition.

The disruption in those processes happens when our immunity is not at par level. And when we have the food that supports the same, we get rid of our health problem.

And Ayurveda just does the same. It deals with giving the right food to the body.

By now, you must have understood that kashaya is not a medicine but the right food.
