Who doesn’t want to communicate better?

The majority of us are great at the things we know but end up miscommunicating when we want to help someone.

If you are someone who wants to improve communication, this blog post is for you. We will be focusing on three steps to communicate better.

I am writing is not something new, but I intend to remind you what you already know.

Step 1 to Communicate Better: Put Yourself into the Shoes of Others

I can’t stress enough the importance of putting yourself in the shoes of others.

What do you think makes the communication successful? — When the other person receives your message and understands it the way you want to convey it.

Before that, I want to ask you a question. Can your reasons be the reasons of others?

You might have achieved a lot in your professional life or personal life. Does that mean your reasons can be theirs as well?

For example, let’s say you started learning digital marketing to build a strong company by building your brand. It is a great goal. And consider someone is learning it to master affiliate marketing to tap into its potential. Or it can be getting a job.

Will it be better if you tell the other person their goals and mindset are not correct and take examples of your idols telling why they opted for digital marketing?

The answer is a straight “NO“.

So, when speaking with them, first, you need to understand their priorities and their reasons for their preferences instead of other options.

That is when you can understand the other person better and refine your message.

Let’s go to step 2.

Step 2 Add Your Experience to Their Situation while Conveying Your Message.

If someone wants your suggestion with something, it means there is a gap in what they know. And you have to fill that gap. After putting yourself into the shoes of the other person, you will understand what that gap is.

You’ll also understand if you can fill it with your experience. Then you can address the concern that is present. It will also add value to someone. However, don’t try to enter into all leagues and choose your battles wisely.

I will tell you about one incident which led to embarrassment. One of my friends is stuck with one issue on her website. I hadn’t explored that part when she was facing that issue. But I wanted to give it a try to help her out if I could. We spent an hour trying to figure the solution out, but we had to disconnect the session without solving her problem.

Just imagine how it will be if you are in that situation?

So, when you understand the situation clearly by putting yourself into their shoes, you will get if you can proceed or not. Let’s consider you can fill that gap. So, let’s go to the third step.

Step 3 Summarise your Message

You may speak on a lot of things to help the other person out. So, it may become hard for them to remember the action steps. However, if you summarise the key points of what you communicate, then solving the problems become simple for the other person.

Even if you observe this post, I summarised the steps before proceeding to the next one.

Final Thoughts

We have a saying that people are not concerned about how much you know unless they see how much you care. It is so true in every case as it applied to communication as well.

You can care about anyone only when you are empathetic. Being empathetic is nothing but putting yourself into the shoes of others.

When you care, you think about all the possible solutions to fill the gap, which is the second step.

Finally, your message will be complete when you summarise. — Because it gives the direction to solve the issues.

If you are an introvert like me, your only channel of communication will be written words. If this is the case with you, you can refer to the types of content writing to decide in which direction, you want to go.

I hope, though you already know about what I wrote, this post adds value to you.
