How to Communicate Better | A Lesson From 7 Vadas

Maybe I can’t communicate better.

Whenever I speak to a person, it turns into a disaster.

I can never get people to understand my viewpoint.

I love to be in solitude as it is better than dealing with people.

Do you have any of these thoughts?

One more popular thought is, “Dealing with machines is better than dealing with people. Because we understand how they respond, but that’s not the case with humans.”

All of these thoughts arise when you don’t know how to communicate better.

If you also have any of them, stay with me till the end. First things first, let’s focus on recollecting about communication.

What is communication?

It is an act of sharing or giving information to another person. It may be either by speaking, writing or using any other medium. Successful communication is nothing but the successful transmission of what is in your mind to the other person as it is.

In simple words, we can say it as intent. Transferring the intention is the goal of everyone.

Why People Struggle to Communicate?

I am not a great communicator but a good writer as I write a lot. But I am consciously improving my communication day by day. Let me share one of the biggest struggles I faced. I know what to say. But I wasn’t aware of the starting and ending points.

It is because of not getting clarity over our intention. — And not keeping it as a base of our communication.

Whenever you want to speak about something with anyone, ask yourself one question. What is the end objective I desire from our communication, and why? Your why is your intent.

Most of the time, we tend to deviate from why we are saying what we are saying. If you move away from your intent more, the chances of miscommunication happen more.

When you are clear on that, your words fall into place to make the other person understand it. There is a saying, “An intelligent person knows what to say, and a wise man knows whether to say it or not.”

And it depends on whether the mind of the other person is ready to comprehend what you have to convey or not. You can compare it with farming.

If the farmer sows seeds into well-prepared land, the plants will grow even if you spill them randomly. However, if the farmer does not prepare the soil, the plants won’t grow regardless of your efforts.

You can understand it by deciphering the vadas story. Let’s enter into the most awaited part.

7 Vadas Judgement

A person visits a hotel and asks the owner, “what is the cost of the vada that satiates my hunger?”

The owner replied ₹6.

The person orders one vada, but he is still hungry. Then he asks second, third, fourth and finally, his hunger satiates on eating the seventh vada.

The owner sends the bill as ₹42. The customer says the cost is only ₹6, as I asked you about the price of the vada that satiates my hunger. And only the seventh vada satiated my hunger. So I am ought to pay only its cost mentioning that my communication is pretty direct.

What did you understand? We always focus only on delivering that seventh vada directly. So you can’t fulfil the purpose of satiating the hunger.

When you deliver that seventh vada along with the six vadas, you can achieve that objective. And it is nothing but preparing the mind of the other person.

Crux

Successful communication is 80% preparing the receiver’s mind and 20% communicating what you have to convey.
