—Is team building scaring you?
Are you worried you may end up getting the wrong people?
Do you want to onboard only the right people in your team?
Then this post is for you.
I will share a secret hack that worked for me in the end.
I am a person who committed a lot of mistakes while building teams. It also cost me two to three years of my time. Finally, I understood which type of people I had to work with within my projects.
Why Working With Right People is Very Important
Let’s ask yourself a question, what is the cost of working with the wrong team?
- It costs you your mental peace. [It happens if there are toxic people or non-action takers and you are serious with your growth]
- Meeting your deadlines will be challenging.
- You can’t scale your business.
- It might hamper the output of your projects.
- You might be busy all day with less productivity.
- Slow growth.
Are you wondering how? Let me share few incidents that I faced.
- I was working so hard, putting my heart and sweat into my business. I onboarded one person in our team. He speaks highly of life and philosophies. However, he expected results without sowing seeds. Just imagine how the outcome would be. Yes, he didn’t travel long enough, and we had to part ways.
- I onboarded one person who was not at all ready to unlearn. He tried to relearn. However, the existing patterns were the reason for his life, and they failed to digest the new learnings. Then I understood the importance of unlearning and relearn concepts.
Moreover, who wants to face such incidents? None, right? Exactly, it happens due to not targeting specific people. The root cause might be that you never know whom you should target. Let’s focus on it in the next section.
How to Onboard Right People Into Your Team?
If you don’t ask yourself what you want, you never get what you need. And you never know whom to reject.
First, you have to focus on the mindset part. Below are three cardinal rules:
- Onboard only the people whom you can help.
- You can’t work with everyone.
- Don’t go with a hunter mentality. Go with serving mentality.
Qualities/Traits you need to look in people to decide if you can work with them.
- You should be able to gel with them. If you can’t have fun with new people, you can’t enjoy working with them. I noticed the same problem with few people.
- Your teammates should be action takers. — Both should put effort to have a smoother ride.
- They should have a learning attitude.
- It shouldn’t take you a lot of effort to help them grow. I mean, no offence. If they can’t understand you at this moment, it means they have a lot to learn to match your pace. Working with them slows you down. You can put criteria on the qualities you expect your teammate should have.
- Your project should be a core project for your team. I don’t mean your team can’t pursue other interests. But their priority should be the way you prioritise your project. I started to work with one person. However, due to the differences in our priorities, I failed to put required efforts. The same happened when I tried to work with one of my friends as he had other top priorities.
Final Thoughts
Look at the qualities I mentioned in this post to screen the people to find the right fit for your team.
Secret Hack, I promised you at the beginning of this post: Go with the mentality of collaboration, not onboarding. People put their best efforts when they have the feeling of belonging and equality.
Even I work with people with an intent of collaboration, and the results are awesome from that time.
Remember, if someone says they can’t work with you, it doesn’t mean you are not good. It just means your thoughts are not in sync and vice versa.
