What differentiates direct selling from NM is, “in direct selling, you may or may not refer others in your team whereas, in NM, you refer people and gets paid for their sales as well.

In simple terms, direct selling is also called single-level marketing, where a direct seller buys products from the parent company and sells them but can’t refer more people.

Network Marketing is a business model that depends on person-to-person sales by independent representatives, often working from home. It involves building a network of consumers where everyone gets a commission on selling products through personal sales and team sales.

It is also known as referral marketing, community commerce, MLM, direct marketing. No matter what you call it, these are the businesses where the best entrepreneurs can succeed. — and even find their purpose.

You have understood what NM is, but you should also know what is not NM to be safe from the opportunities that disguise as MLM.

What is not Network Marketing?

You might have come across platforms saying you can get money on clicking ads, and you can also refer others and get paid for the ads they click. It doesn’t come under NM but money circulation.

Companies selling tour packages, educational courses or online courses where they don’t manufacture a product don’t come under NM.

How Different is Network Marketing from Affiliate Marketing or Digital Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing is a business model where you promote other people’s products and earn commission on every sale. Moreover, the same happens in NM. The only difference is, you get paid for the affiliate sales of the people you refer. Also, that doesn’t happen in affiliate marketing.

Digital Marketing is an amplification mechanism of your message, whereas network marketing is also an amplification method. So when you combine both, you can maximise the results for the same efforts. However, you can create a truly passive income stream with zero maintenance after a certain level on building systems.

Pros:

1. You will be having your own business though you don’t focus on all the admin tasks, R&D and all that stuff.
2. You will feel like your own boss and have the benefit of working whenever you want, wherever you want, without confining to a fixed place.
3. You can also develop skills like developing instant connections with people, persuasive presentations, effective team-leading and follow-through. You can use these skills in your future endeavour and get success in any field you choose.

Cons:

1. It will take time to build a solid business because it is the same as any other business.
2. You will hear many “no”s before you start to hear “yes”s.
3. The competition is more.
